When I get the rare day off during my long business trips, I like to get out of the hotel room and do some sightseeing. We finally had a beautiful day Sunday, and my friend Mark and I took off to Olympic National Park for some hiking. This trip up to Deer Lake from Sol Duc Falls was fantastic. The trail is widely traveled in the summer, but the higher elevations are still snowed in, so we had the place to ourselves. There was still about three to six feet of snow over the last mile of the trail, but it had melted and packed enough for us to walk comfortably over the top. The lake was still half-frozen, but the melting snow rushed out and made for some spectacular waterfalls below. Check out the Picasa album for more pictures and a map of the trail.
I have to say that this was easily one of the best side trips I have taken while traveling for work, right up there with bicycling the length of Andros Island in the Bahamas, ice skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, dodging the sheep along the edge of chalk cliffs in the south of England, and helping Laura drop pennies in Rome's Trevi Fountain.

Tough life. :)
I know, don't you feel sorry for me? ;) The only hard part is being away from my girls for so long, although I suppose technically it's harder on Sally, so I really don't have anything to complain about!
Just now reading your followup comment... sorry about that. But I must say that you are VERY WISE to acknowledge it's harder on her than you. Brownie points from the Stay-At-Home-Moms of America for your comment!
