Things Are Looking Up

The latest addition to Alexander's train set is my dad's old Lionel Graduated Trestle. There are 11 pairs of plastic piers that slowly increase the track height to the point where a train can pass underneath it. The track is supposed to attach to the piers with an extra piece called a tie channel. It slides into the grooves on the top of each pier, and the track screws down to the tie channel.

Unfortunately, the original tie channels from my dad's graduated trestle are missing, so I had to improvise. I got a piece of Lexan ("200 times stronger than glass!") from Home Depot and cut strips to fit in each groove and drilled holes in each end for the track. A couple of 1/2" long 4/40 screws hold the track in place on top of each pier.

The completed kit takes up a lot of space, so to try it out we set it on the floor. Alexander likes walking around like a giant and putting his toys around it. That's okay for temporary setups, but we're going to need something off the floor if he wants to keep it out for long.
