Colorado Vacation, Day 1

Day one, you say? What about yesterday, doesn't the plane ride out count? Look, if you came here expecting to read a tedious post about commercial air travel, then I am really offended. So no, today was the first real day of our vacation, and it was all about conquering Pike's Peak:

Sunrise was pretty enough, but the day turned ugly in a hurry when Jessica upchucked her breakfast. Unlike Zebulon Pike, we didn't come halfway across the country to not stand on top of his mountain, so we packed an extra plastic bag and headed for the train. Laura really enjoyed the trip up the mountain. She listened to the conductor's stories and even took some of her own pictures.

Sadly, we didn't see much wildlife on the mountain. Our chances will probably be better later in the week at Rocky Mountain National Park where the visitors feed the animals. Jessica and Alexander napped most of the way up, but they were both good sports, and we even got a family picture taken up top.

On the way down, jetlag and a night sharing a bed with Jessica finally caught up with Laura, and she took a snooze.

Jessica still wasn't feeling well and was even running a temperature, so we were a little worried when we got back to the hotel. Sally gave her some Motrin for the fever, but the medicine that really turned her day around was when Laura asked to go swimming. Jessica wanted to go swimming, too. Her appetite picked up, and soon she was ready to put on her bathing suit and go outside. By the time she had jumped in and out of the pool a dozen times, she was even acting like herself. So instead of canceling our plans for the evening, we went to 50-cent hotdog night (not to be confused with Fiddy Cent hotdog night) at the Sky Sox minor league baseball game.

As America's highest elevation professional baseball park, we expected to see some home runs. Unfortunately, the first 3 home runs went to the visiting team, and the final home run was when we left early to avoid the impending thunderstorm. Our night ended at Sonic for some tasty beverages and dessert, where Jessica showed us that a little fever and upset stomach are nothing compared to her irrepressible will.
